Background of the Study
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a critical lifesaving procedure used in emergencies to restore breathing and circulation in individuals experiencing cardiac arrest or respiratory failure (Akinmoladun et al., 2023). It is a fundamental skill for healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, who often serve as the first responders to such emergencies. The effectiveness of CPR depends not only on the timely initiation of the procedure but also on the adherence to established protocols that guide its administration (Khan et al., 2024). Nurses are at the forefront of delivering CPR, and their knowledge and compliance with CPR protocols are essential for improving patient survival rates during emergencies.
In Nigeria, while CPR training is integrated into nursing education, there are concerns regarding the consistency of knowledge and adherence to protocols, particularly in high-pressure situations. Previous studies have indicated that inadequate knowledge, lack of frequent practice, and poor compliance with CPR protocols are common issues among healthcare professionals in resource-limited settings (Oloyede & Adeleke, 2023). Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, is a major healthcare facility in Northern Nigeria that serves as a teaching hospital for nursing students and healthcare professionals. As such, it is essential to assess the knowledge and compliance of nurses at the hospital with CPR protocols to ensure that best practices are followed during cardiac emergencies.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical importance of CPR in emergency care, there are concerns regarding the level of knowledge and compliance with CPR protocols among nurses in healthcare settings, including Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria. Inadequate knowledge or failure to follow protocols during CPR can result in poor patient outcomes and reduced survival rates. This study aims to examine the knowledge and compliance of nurses at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, with CPR protocols, identifying gaps in knowledge and practices that may affect the quality of care provided during emergencies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in emergency, intensive care, and general wards at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, as these areas are most likely to require CPR interventions. The study will not include nurses from other departments, limiting its scope.
A limitation of the study is the reliance on self-reported data, which may lead to bias in the responses. Additionally, the findings may not be applicable to hospitals outside the region with different resources and training programs.
